Parliament must rise above pettiness, prioritise national interest – Bagbin

On Tuesday, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin urged MPs to prioritize national interest. He emphasized the need to rise above petty politics and focus on serving the people.

“Parliament will not stand by while members face unlawful persecution,” he stated. However, he added that Parliament would not protect those misusing its privileges to hinder investigations.

Mr. Bagbin welcomed MPs back from their Easter break on March 29, 2025. He warned against misconduct, stating that parliamentary privilege does not mean immunity from lawful inquiries.

“The immunities granted are meant to protect the legislature's independence, not obstruct justice,” he said.

He encouraged members to act with dignity and respect rules. He stressed the importance of committee work, saying a Parliament is as strong as its committees.

“Let us rededicate ourselves with patriotism and unity,” Speaker Bagbin concluded. He called on members to make a positive impact for the nation.
