Parliament passes Ghana Gold Board Bill 2025

Parliament has passed the Ghana Gold Board Bill 2025. This bill establishes the Gold Board to regulate the gold industry. It aims to enhance transparency and traceability. The goal is also to boost foreign exchange earnings.

The new regulatory body will oversee gold purchases, sales, and exports. It will ensure efficient management of the sector. This is expected to generate revenue and stabilize the cedi.

The Minority Caucus opposed the bill. They criticized it for allegedly encouraging illegal mining, known as *galamsey*. They argued that it lacks safeguards against illicit activities in gold mining.

The Minority believes this legislation could legitimize unlawful operations in the sector. In contrast, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga supported the bill. He called it a historic piece of legislation.

Ayariga praised Members of Parliament for their dedication during deliberations. He expressed pride in passing such important legislation overnight. He stated that they have upheld Ghanaians' trust in them.

The passage of the bill was controversial. The Minority staged a walkout during discussions on it. They protested First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor’s refusal to reconvene at 10 am on March 29th.

Despite these divisions, the Ghana Gold Board Bill 2025 sets a structured framework for gold regulation in Ghana.
