Parliament’s Human Rights Committee vows action on Nsawam Prison overcrowding

The Human Rights Committee of Parliament is taking urgent action. They aim to address severe overcrowding at Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

This prison was built in 1960 for 717 inmates. It now holds 3,548 prisoners, nearly five times its capacity. During a visit, Committee Chairman Ernest Yaw Anim noted the dire conditions.

He promised to push for immediate measures to reduce overcrowding. “This facility was built for only 717 people,” he said. “It now holds about 3,548 inmates. This is a serious concern.”

Anim emphasized that Parliament will work quickly to resolve this issue. He also announced plans to visit witch camps in northern Ghana. This is part of efforts to promote human rights awareness.

The ‘I Am Not a Witch’ campaign has gained global attention. It highlights the plight of women accused of witchcraft. The committee will visit all witch camps in the North.

Additionally, they plan to launch educational programs on human rights nationwide. Some issues may seem trivial, but they are important to address. The committee aims to raise awareness about human rights violations.

They are committed to working with institutions and civil society groups. Their goal is to improve Ghana’s human rights record and uphold citizens' dignity.
