Parliament has summoned the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka. He is to appear before the House tomorrow, March 25, 2025. The purpose is to brief members about the search of Dr. Ernest Addison's residence. Dr. Addison is the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG). This search occurred last Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
The Deputy Majority Leader, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, made this announcement. He presented the Business Statement for the upcoming week last Friday. “Mr Speaker,” he said, “the Minister will brief us on Tuesday.” He added that members should attend this important briefing.
Armed men allegedly stormed Dr. Addison’s home last Wednesday morning. They were reportedly security operatives searching for cash in a supposed vault.
Following this incident, the Minority in Parliament held a press conference last Thursday. They condemned what they called unlawful raids targeting former appointees of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin spoke at the conference and recalled a similar raid on another official's home.
He mentioned a previous raid on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's residence. This raid was led by Richard Jakpa, an NDC activist and Director of Operations at National Security. Mr Afenyo-Markin criticized these raids as violations of individual rights and stated: “This Rambo-style approach must cease.”
In response to the incident, some government officials have spoken out. The Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed it was part of ongoing investigations into alleged misappropriation of state assets. He stated that the operation was conducted legally with a valid warrant.
“We take full responsibility for these searches,” he said. “They were conducted in accordance with legal procedures.”
Mr Ricketts-Hagan also announced that current BoG Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama will brief Parliament on March 26, 2025. This briefing will cover circumstances leading to bank collapses and other financial institutions.
First Deputy Minority Chief Whip Habib Iddrisu cautioned about which banks would be discussed since some cases are in court. In response, the Deputy Majority Leader clarified that this briefing would not address court issues but provide information for MPs representing their constituents.
