Parliamentary Committee Chair demands state-supported pilgrimages for Christians, Muslims

Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah chairs the Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs Committee in Parliament. He has urged the President to create travel arrangements for Ghanaian pilgrims. This includes both Muslims and Christians during their pilgrimage seasons.

Dr. Kyei Asamoah spoke to the media about this issue. He noted that Christians make up 71.3% of Ghana’s population, while Muslims account for 19.9%. He believes it is time for the State to support religious pilgrimages safely.

“We need a conducive environment for these holy journeys,” he said. “It shouldn’t lead to loss of life.” He praised current arrangements for Muslim pilgrims going to Mecca but sees room for improvement.

He also called for similar support for Christian pilgrims traveling to Israel. “We need structures to help Christians visit the Holy Land,” he added. This would help them understand their faith better.

Dr. Kyei Asamoah mentioned that his committee will meet with the Hajj Board soon. They will discuss this year’s pilgrimage arrangements and any challenges faced. The goal is to gather information that can improve safety and dignity for all pilgrims in the future.
