Parliamentary Committee backs Zoomlion, opposes call for YEA contract termination

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation opposes calls to end the Youth Employment Authority's (YEA) contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

This response follows comments from journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni. He urged YEA to terminate the contract due to alleged worker exploitation and breaches of obligations.

During a visit to the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant, Committee Chairman John Kwabena Bless Oti rejected these claims. He warned that not renewing the contract could lead to job losses. Zoomlion currently employs thousands of Ghanaians across the country.

“We invite Manasseh Azure to appear before the committee,” Mr. Oti said. “He can share his concerns when Parliament resumes.” He added, “I disagree with him. Jospong is a Ghanaian company, and we should address issues constructively.”

Mr. Oti also stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government supports the sanitation sector. He announced plans for a dedicated fund for sustainable sanitation and waste management.

He assured stakeholders that arrears owed to YEA workers and Jospong Group would be paid. The 2025 national budget includes over GH¢13 billion for clearing these arrears.

“Any amount owed Zoomlion will be paid,” he said. “We cannot risk thousands of jobs.”

The Committee’s remarks highlight the need for transparency while considering socioeconomic realities in large-scale sanitation programs.
