Parliamentary Select Committee on Health to support retooling of hospitals

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health is ready to support improvements in major health facilities. They aim to enhance care delivery across the country.

Dr. Thomas Anabah, a committee member, expressed concern about deaths caused by outdated equipment. He stated, “It is unacceptable that we don’t have equipment in hospitals.” He believes the issue lies with the government or hospital management.

Dr. Anabah emphasized the need for resources to equip hospitals properly. He mentioned that various methods exist to obtain equipment but requires committee agreement first.

This pledge follows a visit from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. His visit revealed that malfunctioning equipment led to patient deaths at Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The ongoing breakdown of life-saving equipment poses a significant challenge for healthcare delivery in the country. Despite this recurring issue, past governments have done little to resolve it.

Dr. Anabah insists it’s time for a lasting solution to be implemented. He shared his thoughts during a familiarization visit to health facilities in the Ashanti Region.

The committee visited Ashanti Regional Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. They noted concerns about lack of space and high staff turnover rates at these facilities.

Through discussions with managers, the Parliamentary Committee proposed solutions to address these challenges. Dr. Anabah remains hopeful for an amicable resolution and trusts facility managers will cooperate.

Additionally, the committee encourages these facilities to expand services offered to the public.
