Perennial flooding shows that leadership takes citizens for granted - Prof. Appiagyei-Atua

Associate Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua from the University of Ghana criticized past governments. He said they have not addressed the causes of flooding in Ghana. He believes this shows that leadership takes citizens' lives for granted.

He spoke on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, May 24. His comments came after recent floods affected parts of Greater Accra Region.

Prof. Appiagyei-Atua linked the flooding to “a culture of indiscipline.” He noted that law enforcement fails to ensure compliance. Individuals also irresponsibly build in waterways.

He stated, “The problem is not just with leadership.” It also involves indiscipline among law enforcers and builders.

His remarks followed confirmation from NADMO about five deaths in the floods on May 18. The organization blamed poor drainage and unregulated urban planning for these fatalities.

NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yartey, shared details about the deaths. Three occurred in Ga East Municipality, while two were reported in Adenta.

He emphasized that urgent action is needed to improve infrastructure and enforce regulations. Without it, such tragedies will keep happening.
