The Minority in Parliament calls the petition to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo a serious setback for Ghana's democracy.
At a press conference yesterday, John Darko spoke for the Minority Caucus. He said this attempt to remove the Chief Justice is part of a larger plan. This plan aims to silence the judiciary and gain political control over the legal system.
Darko warned that this move could lead to troubling times in Ghana’s history. He referenced past events where the judiciary was attacked for political reasons. He mentioned the murder of three judges in 1982 during the PNDC regime as an example.
Mr. Darko believes that what is happening now tries to revive such dangerous practices. He stated, “The NDC, which comes from the PNDC, seems to think Ghanaians voted for them to control society, including the judiciary.”
