The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has launched its Annual General Meeting (AGM) for 2025. They also introduced a new logo. The goal is to strengthen the role of pharmacists in primary healthcare.
Pharmacists are often the first point of contact for many Ghanaians. It is crucial to enhance their ability to provide quality and affordable services. The government's free primary healthcare policy makes this even more urgent.
Rev. Dr. Dennis Sena Awitty, PSGH's Executive Secretary, highlighted the importance of community pharmacies. He emphasized the need to identify weaknesses in the system. This will help meet public and government demands.
Non-Communicable Diseases are increasing, making early detection vital. He asked how pharmacies can be positioned as accessible health care providers for screenings.
The AGM will take place from September 22 to September 27 at the University of Cape Coast. The theme is “Strengthening pharmacy for primary healthcare.” Discussions will focus on advancing primary healthcare through pharmacy.
A dedicated website, ‘psghoguaa25.com,’ was launched for members. It will provide information, registration options, photos, and live streaming of the meeting.
The event will start with a workshop on September 22 for students and pharmacists nationwide. Fun activities along the beach are planned for Tuesday.
The official opening will be on Wednesday with a “pharma dialogue” and elections for new leaders.
On Thursday, PSGH will celebrate World Pharmacists Day, followed by a career fair on Friday.
Dr. Awitty noted there are over 5,000 community pharmacies in Ghana. They play a key role in making the government's free primary healthcare program successful. Achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030 relies heavily on pharmacists and community pharmacies.
Mr. Kwabena Asante Offei, PSGH Vice President, stated that pharmacy has become more people-centered. The launch aims to engage the public in shaping decisions about healthcare.
He reiterated that pharmacists are essential in advancing primary healthcare globally. Today's trained pharmacists are more competent and available than ever before.
Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh, PSGH President, called the AGM the society's highest decision-making forum. He urged all members to participate in the meeting and elections.
Madam Cynthia Yeboah Mintah from the Pharmacy Council expressed support for PSGH's efforts. She encouraged all members to attend the meeting in September 2025.
