MTN Ghana launched its new SME support facility, SME Accelerate, on Thursday. The event took place at the Accra Metropolitan Authority's forecourt.
SME Accelerate is a year-long campaign. It aims to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through digital innovation and market access. The initiative also includes 'Adwumapa,' a support bundle for women-led businesses.
This launch is part of MTN's commitment to supporting SMEs. The company wants to help them grow and adapt to changing needs in Ghana.
During the launch, CEO Stephen Blewett spoke about the importance of SMEs. He noted that 85% of businesses in Ghana are classified as SMEs.
Blewett described SME Accelerate as a campaign focused on helping SMEs operate smarter and faster. It will leverage technology, capacity-building initiatives, and tailored support.
He also introduced Adwumapa, which means “good work” in Akan. This digital bundle is designed specifically for women-led SMEs. Blewett pointed out that women-led businesses make up 44% of Ghana’s MSMEs but remain underserved.
Angela Mensah-Poku, MTN's Chief Enterprise Business Officer, emphasized the vital role of SMEs. She mentioned that they deliver products and services while generating employment and fostering economic growth.
Despite their importance, many small businesses struggle in Ghana. Various challenges hinder their growth and sustainability.
Mensah-Poku explained that MTN has studied the local market over the years. They aim to understand the difficulties these enterprises face better.
“We started with a modest range of services,” she said. “We have engaged consistently to develop tailored solutions for SMEs.”
