A Ghanaian fishing vessel, MENGXIN 1, was attacked on March 27, 2025. The incident occurred in Ghanaian waters around 5:53 PM. Seven armed individuals boarded the ship and fired warning shots.
The crew members sought refuge in a safe area onboard. The pirates stayed for about three hours. They gathered the crew on deck and seized their mobile phones.
After the attackers left, some crew members emerged from hiding. They found that the Captain, Chief Mate, and Chief Engineer were missing. All three are Chinese nationals and are suspected to have been kidnapped.
With no mobile network at sea, the crew navigated closer to land. They reported the incident after reaching a signal area. The MENGXIN 1 has since docked safely at Tema Fishing Harbour.
The Marine Police and Eastern Naval Command’s Naval Intelligence team began investigations. They confirmed both the attack and the suspected abductions.
To address this situation, the Ghana Navy shared details with neighboring countries. This was done through ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F in Accra. The MMCC operates under the Yaoundé Architecture for maritime security.
