Kwabena Bempong, the Chief Resident Engineer for the Pokuase-Nsawam Highway project, announced a 15-month extension. The new completion date is now after July 2024.
The delay is due to two main issues. First, there has been slow payment of compensation to affected residents. Second, there are challenges in relocating utility lines.
Out of 76 eligible residents, only 40 have received compensation so far. During a recent inspection by Parliament's Roads and Transport Committee, Bempong urged the government to release funds quickly. He wants to avoid further delays in construction.
Bempong stated that most heavy work is already done. This includes concrete and drainage works. Only small earthworks and roadworks remain.
He believes that if compensation and utility relocation are resolved, the project can finish within 12 to 15 months. However, he noted that time extensions could lead to additional costs.
