The police in the Northern Region have arrested another suspect. This is in connection with the killing of 26-year-old footballer Yakubu Mohammed Habib.
The suspect, Abdul Majeed, and his accomplice, Abdul Majeed Saeed, were wanted. They went into hiding after being declared fugitives by the Ghana Police Service in March 2025.
The killing happened on February 25-26, 2025, in Fou. This suburb is located in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.
A dispute sparked the incident between Yakubu's brother and a neighbor. Mustapha Muktadel had an argument with Baba Habib.
Community members reported that Baba Habib assaulted Mustapha on February 25 at around 9:00 p.m. Later that night, Baba Habib called Yakubu's brother to meet him, but he refused.
Around 12:30 a.m. on February 26, Baba Habib returned with about 20 people. This led to a confrontation between them.
During the altercation, someone retrieved a pump-action gun from a vehicle. The person began firing shots and hit Yakubu Mohammed Habib.
Yakubu was rushed to Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). Unfortunately, he died from his injuries at around 4:30 a.m. Multiple suspects have been arrested in connection with this incident.
For three months, Yakubu's family monitored Abdul Majeed Saeed’s location. Their efforts paid off when they spotted him yesterday at his house.
Yakubu Ibrahim reported Abdul Majeed’s presence to the police immediately. When police arrived, Abdul Majeed tried to escape through the back door but was seen.
Police searched the premises thoroughly but initially could not find him. They found signs of recent occupation like a hanged shirt and charging phone.
Abdul Majeed was eventually discovered hiding on the ceiling. "He thought he couldn't be seen," said Mr. Ibrahim.
When asked to come down, he lay still for some time. Eventually, they pushed him down and he fell to the ground where he was arrested.
Abdul Majeed sustained injuries during his arrest and is receiving treatment at TTH while handcuffed. One family member also suffered injuries during this incident.
"I saw him at TTH; they have handcuffed him," Mr. Ibrahim stated. "One of our colleagues also sustained injuries."
