The Ghana Police Service has started an investigation into an alleged assault. This incident involves Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu.
The alleged assault occurred during a recent protest. This protest was organized by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political groups.
The Police reviewed several videos from the demonstration. These videos captured an incident between a police officer and Afenyo-Markin.
After their review, the Police contacted Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin. They requested Hon. Afenyo-Markin's release to assist with the investigation.
The statement also mentioned that the involved police officer will cooperate fully.
The protest took place in Accra. It was in response to what the NPP called a politically motivated suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Although largely peaceful, tensions rose between demonstrators and security personnel at times.
The Police have not revealed full details about the altercation or the officer's identity. However, they emphasized that they are taking this matter seriously.
