Police clash with trader during AMA decongestion exercise at Circle

A confrontation occurred between police and a trader at Circle, Accra, on May 21. The trader resisted eviction during the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) decongestion exercise.

The AMA taskforce, with police support, was clearing unauthorized structures. They focused on street vendors and obstructions in the Neoplan Station area. This area is known for congestion and illegal trading.

Eyewitnesses reported that tensions rose when the trader refused to leave. A scuffle broke out between the trader and security personnel. The situation was quickly controlled but highlighted challenges for authorities.

The decongestion campaign started on May 20, 2025. It is a joint effort with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). The goal is to reduce urban congestion and improve sanitation in Accra.

On the first day, the taskforce targeted areas near the AMA Head Office. They covered Kinbu Road to Railways and ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Statue. These locations are known for heavy street vending.

Mayor Michael Allotey emphasized that this initiative will continue long-term. “This exercise is not a nine-day wonder,” he stated firmly.

He also announced that seized items would be donated to the Ghana Prisons Service instead of being auctioned. “Today is your lucky day,” he warned non-compliant traders.

Authorities urge traders and the public to cooperate with efforts to make Accra cleaner and safer.
