Under the leadership of Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare, the Ghana Police Service has seen a significant reduction in disciplinary convictions for officers. According to Professor Kwame Tankebe, a criminologist at the University of Ghana, the number of such convictions dropped from 17 to just 7 in 2022. This decline highlights a shift towards a more effective internal disciplinary process within the force.
Professor Tankebe attributes this improvement to various reforms implemented by IGP Dampare since taking office in 2021. He emphasized that these changes are fostering greater accountability and professionalism among police personnel. The reduction in disciplinary actions suggests that officers may be adhering more closely to ethical standards and regulations.
Tankebe's insights reflect a broader commitment within the police service to enhance its reputation and public trust, crucial elements for effective law enforcement. As these reforms unfold, they could serve as a model for other institutions aiming to improve governance and accountability within their ranks.
