The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has urged the Ghana Police Service to enforce a 15% fare reduction.
GPRTU claims they have communicated this fare reduction to their members. Abbas Ibrahim Moro, the GPRTU Public Relations Officer, stated that most members are complying. However, some drivers from unregistered unions are not following the new fares. He emphasized that law enforcement must ensure full compliance.
Moro added that law enforcement should set an example for non-compliant drivers. He believes it is important for everyone to follow the laws. “No member should act unlawfully and escape consequences,” he said.
He also mentioned that some stations have strict measures in place to ensure adherence. “I have visited several stations and observed compliance among drivers,” he noted. As branch chairman at Abeka-Lapaz main station, he explained that non-compliant drivers cannot pick passengers there.
Meanwhile, John Mahama praised GPRTU for reducing fares during the 9th Ghana CEO Summit and Awards Expo. He commended GPRTU and other businesses for adjusting prices due to recent cedi gains. Mahama encouraged businesses yet to adjust prices to pass on these benefits to Ghanaians.
At the summit, Mahama expressed gratitude towards those who reduced their prices in response to the cedi's appreciation. “Thank you very much, GPRTU,” he said. He urged others who haven't adjusted their prices yet to do so.
President Mahama assured attendees that his government would maintain recent cedi gains. He promised fiscal discipline and a supportive environment for businesses to thrive.
