Police nabs suspect in the murder of UEW lecturer

Joshua Karry Arthur has been arrested. He is a suspect in the murder of Prof. Amedeka Mawuedem Koku, a lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

Prof. Koku was reported missing on May 21. His body was later found buried at his home in Essuokyir, Central Region.

The police confirmed they recovered several items from Arthur. These include two Samsung phones, a laptop, and a 50-inch television. They also found a key to a Toyota Fortuner car.

On May 22, 2025, police arrested Joshua Karry Arthur at the deceased's residence. Colleagues reported Prof. Koku missing after failing to reach him.

Police discovered blood stains near the house. They traced these stains to sand about 23 meters away. Upon clearing the sand, they found the body believed to be Prof. Koku's.

The body has been taken to the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is calling for justice for Prof. Koku. In a press release dated May 25, UTAG expressed deep sorrow over this incident.

UTAG-UEW President Stephen Osei Akyiaw and Secretary Dr. Bernard Tutu-Boahene signed the statement. They emphasized that this tragedy affects not just UEW but the entire nation.

They stated that accountability is crucial for ensuring safety in academic institutions.
