Police officer drowns in River Offin during galamsey operation at Assin Asaman

A tragic incident occurred in Ghana's Central Region. Constable John Kwabena Dogbe drowned in the River Offin at Assin Asaman. He was participating in an operation against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Local police and rescue teams conducted a four-hour search. They eventually recovered Officer Dogbe’s body. The body was taken to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu. Medical personnel confirmed his death after an examination.

This incident has deeply affected the local police force and community. It happened during a swoop operation by the Central North Regional Police Command. This operation aimed to combat illegal mining, which harms the environment.

Reports say that when police arrived, illegal miners scattered in all directions. Some tried to escape by crossing the River Offin. While seizing mining equipment, Officer Dogbe lost his footing on the slippery bank and fell into the water.

His body has been deposited at St. Francis Xavier Hospital for preservation.

The Central North Regional Police Command expressed condolences to Constable Dogbe's family and colleagues. They acknowledged his dedication to protecting the environment and fighting illegal mining.

Despite this loss, the police reaffirmed their commitment to battling galamsey in the region. Authorities have launched a full investigation into Officer Dogbe’s death. They are also intensifying efforts against illegal mining activities.
