Police recruit 140 anti-drug volunteers to monitor Zongo communities

The Ghana Police Service has launched a new initiative. This program aims to involve local residents in police operations. It focuses specifically on Zongo communities to combat drug peddling and abuse.

This initiative follows a directive from the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak. He made this announcement during his recent visit to Sabon Zongo in Accra.

The minister promised support for those who help arrest drug offenders. He stated that these individuals would be prioritized for recruitment into national security services.

“We are taking steps to address drug trafficking in our Zongo communities,” he said. “Those who assist in arrests will have opportunities in security services.” This statement was made at a sensitization program on Thursday, May 8.

Watchdog groups, consisting of both men and women, will play a key role. They will identify and monitor drug hotspots while supporting police operations. This community-focused approach aims to build trust between law enforcement and residents.

So far, around 140 individuals have joined the program. The Interior Minister also emphasized empowering Zongo youth. He said, “We must provide opportunities that steer our young people away from crime.” He believes this will help them contribute meaningfully to national development.
