Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey discussed the June 3, 2015 disaster. This tragic event resulted in over 150 deaths in Accra. It was caused by a flood and an explosion at a GOIL fuel station.
On Channel One TV's The Point of View, Quartey spoke about the disaster. He linked it to public indiscipline and political interference in urban planning. He emphasized that Ghana often fails to prevent such disasters due to political expediency.
Quartey stated, “One is indiscipline. The other is lack of planning.” He criticized how politicians influence regulatory institutions. Technical officers know how to improve safety but are hindered by political concerns.
He explained that officials at Land Use and Spatial Planning understand what needs to be done. However, politicians worry that following these steps could hurt their election chances. Quartey concluded by urging honesty about the situation.
