Lakes and rivers in Ghana, once safe water sources, are now contaminated with parasites causing schistosomiasis, increasing infertility risks among women.

Dr. Joseph Larbi Opare, Programme Manager for Neglected Tropical Diseases, warned that female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) can lead to complications such as miscarriages and blocked fallopian tubes.

The pollution stems from open defecation and urination into water bodies.

He urged residents in affected areas to participate in Ghana Health Service (GHS) mass drug administration exercises and avoid contact with infected water.

Children, who frequently swim or play in these waters, are at higher risk.

Dr. Opare called for improved sanitation and potable water access to curb the spread, emphasizing that schistosomiasis remains a serious health concern in many communities.
