Pope Francis appeared at his hospital window in Rome. This was his first public appearance since February 14.
The 88-year-old pontiff was discharged shortly after the blessing. Doctors say he needs at least two months of rest at the Vatican.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the Pope's doctors, reported two critical health episodes. He stated that the Pope's life was in danger during these times.
Despite this, Pope Francis was never intubated and remained alert. Although he is not fully healed, he no longer has pneumonia. Doctors believe he will return to work soon if his recovery continues.
Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri expressed great joy seeing the Pope leave the hospital. He called it a gift to both the city and the world.
A crowd gathered outside the hospital on Sunday to see him. Bishop Larry Kulick from Pennsylvania felt relieved and overjoyed upon seeing the Pope.
Ilaria Della Bidia, a singer from Rome, described an overwhelming sense of love in the square. She said it felt like heaven.
Ana Matos from Brazil arrived just before the Pope appeared. She compared her happiness to when she had her son and felt thrilled to see him smile.
The Pope had been seen publicly only once since his hospitalization. Last week, a photograph showed him praying in a hospital chapel.
Earlier this month, an audio recording of him played in St Peter's Square. His voice sounded breathless as he thanked Catholics for their prayers.
Pope Francis has led the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years. He has faced various health issues throughout his life, including lung surgery at age 21, which makes him more prone to infections.
