Pope Leo XIV to hold first mass today in Sistine Chapel as papacy duty begins

Pope Leo XIV, the new head of the Catholic Church, will celebrate his first Mass today. The Mass will take place in the Sistine Chapel at 11:00 local time (09:00 GMT, 10:00 BST). This marks the official start of his papal ministry.

Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, he is 68 years old. He was a former missionary and Archbishop in Peru. Yesterday, he made history as the first North American pope.

Leo XIV is seen as a reform-minded leader with a strong pastoral background. His appointment has received widespread attention and praise globally. U.S. President Donald Trump called it a “great honour,” reflecting national pride.

In Peru, where Leo XIV served among the poor, many feel proud of him. However, some note he faces challenges regarding sexual abuse cases within the Church.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV would help the poor. He said Filipinos are praying for the Pope’s strength and health. “May his life inspire us to walk with our Lord Jesus Christ,” he added.

Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez praised Pope Leo XIV’s message of peace and compassion. He urged unity in prayer during these challenging times. “The light from Rome shines brightly,” he said.

Reform advocates within the Church view his election with cautious optimism. They believe his roots and Latin American experience will guide him well. His Mass today is expected to symbolize a transformative papacy for many around the world.
