Pope Leo XIV urges church to confront crisis of faith in first mass as pontiff

In his first homily as the new head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV spoke clearly. He stood beneath Michelangelo’s famous frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. The American-born pope delivered a serious yet hopeful message. He said the Church must confront a growing global crisis of faith.

Pope Leo XIV addressed members of the College of Cardinals. Catholics around the world watched closely. He described a world increasingly affected by “practical atheism.” This is when even baptized individuals live as if God does not matter.

“We are witnessing a profound erosion of belief,” he stated. “When faith weakens, life’s meaning fades.” He added that mercy is forgotten and human dignity is violated. Families also begin to unravel.

The pope expressed concern that many no longer see Jesus as Savior. Instead, they view him merely as a historical figure. His message is often overshadowed by a culture focused on success, money, and technology. “This world sees the Gospel as absurd, yet it desperately needs its truth,” he noted.

Pope Leo XIV urged a return to authentic Christian living. He emphasized that everyday believers should shine as witnesses through holiness and compassion. Moral courage is also essential.

“Our task is to be light,” he said. “Not by building towers, but by walking in humility and faith.” He encouraged bringing Christ to those on the margins of society.
