Ralph Ayitey, CEO of Coconut Grove Hotels, has called for action to improve Ghana’s poultry value chain. He warned that the sector is struggling due to cheap imports and a weak supply system.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 17, 2025, Mr. Ayitey highlighted the issue of imported frozen poultry. These products are cheaper for consumers but harm local production. This situation threatens jobs in Ghana's agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
As an advocate for local poultry consumption, he emphasized the need for investment. Large-scale production facilities are essential for sustainable industry support.
Mr. Ayitey also pointed out that Ghana relies heavily on imported maize. This reliance threatens not only poultry but also national food security.
He stated, “Without foreign intervention by way of maize, nobody can survive.” He stressed the importance of a strong supply chain to create jobs in various sectors.
Farmers should focus on raising healthy birds instead of finding markets for their products. The delicate nature of poultry farming requires attention and care from farmers. Someone else should handle processing and distribution to consumers.
