Preach against drug abuse - Interior Minister urges religious leaders

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has made a strong appeal. He urged religious leaders to speak out against drug abuse.

During his three-day visit to the Northern Region, he addressed some religious leaders. Alhaji Mubarak highlighted their important role in shaping societal values.

He encouraged them to join the fight against drug abuse from the pulpit. "Tamale is known for its culture and hardworking youth," he said. "We cannot let this issue destroy our future."

His call comes after a BBC documentary identified Tamale as a hub for opioid abuse among youth. The minister's tour aimed to meet stakeholders and assess security in the region.

He also wanted to strengthen collaboration between the ministry and key partners for peace and development.

In his remarks, Alhaji Mubarak urged churches and mosques to offer skills training. This would help idle youth avoid drugs.

“Community initiatives like counselling can address drug abuse,” he added. He emphasized that strengthening law enforcement is crucial to combat illegal drugs.

Rev. Fr Dr Wilfred A. Agana, a Catholic Priest, praised the ministry's efforts. He expressed readiness to partner with them on social issues in the Northern Region.

Sheikh Alhassan Abukari Issah, Chairman of the Northern Regional Muslim Council, also offered support from the Muslim community in this campaign against drug abuse.
