President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to donate six months of his salary. This donation will go to the newly established MahamaCares Trust Fund. The fund aims to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Ghana.

At the fund's launch, President Mahama mentioned he hasn't started receiving his salary yet. He is working with the Auditor-General to finalize the necessary processes. Once completed, he will honor his full six-month salary donation.

The MahamaCares initiative supports Ghanaians suffering from serious NCDs. These include cancer, diabetes, kidney failure, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke. President Mahama highlighted the urgent need for a national response to these illnesses.

He noted that treating NCDs places a heavy financial burden on families. "The cost of treating non-communicable diseases continues to devastate many households," he said. He added that this fund will help patients access specialist care without financial hardship.

To ensure effectiveness, President Mahama stated that the fund needs about GHS 3 billion annually for three years. A significant portion of this funding will come from the National Health Insurance Levy.

The MahamaCares Trust Fund will work closely with public health institutions. Its goal is to expand access to advanced diagnostic and treatment services for NCDs across Ghana.
