Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications, has dismissed claims made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). They allege that President John Dramani Mahama is plotting a third term.
Kwakye Ofosu stated that President Mahama is not interested in running again. He was quoted by UTV saying, “President John Mahama has no intention of running for a third term.”
The NPP’s Justin Frimpong Kodua accused the NDC and Mahama of trying to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo. This would supposedly allow Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.
Kodua claimed this argument relates to Article 66(2) of the Constitution. He noted that some individuals are allegedly planning to interpret it differently. They want to suggest that the two-term limit applies only to successive terms.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr, managing director of Insight Newspaper, warned against any attempt by Mahama to seek a third term. He stated there would be strong resistance if such an attempt were made.
Pratt emphasized that there is no indication Mahama is pursuing this plan. In an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, he said any president seeking constitutional amendments for extended tenure will face opposition.
He added that past presidents have reviewed the constitution without seeking third terms. “What kind of issue is this?” he questioned regarding the allegations against Mahama.
In summary, Felix Kwakye Ofosu affirmed that President Mahama does not intend to run for a third term.
