President John Dramani Mahama has nominated seven Justices for the Supreme Court of Ghana.
This nomination follows Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. This article allows the President to nominate individuals for the highest court, with advice from the Judicial Council and approval from Parliament.
The nominees are:
- Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
- Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
- Justice Senyo Dzamefe
- Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
- Justice Philip Bright Mensah
- Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
- Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
On April 29, 2025, Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., Secretary to the President, sent a formal letter. The letter emphasized the urgency of this matter.
“I trust that the Council will expedite action on their considerations,” Dr. Mahama wrote. The letter was addressed to Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and copied to the Vice President and Chief of Staff.
Dr. Mahama also included their Curricula Vitae in his communication. He expressed his highest consideration for their review.
This communication shows the President’s intent to strengthen Ghana's judicial system.
