President Mahama on the heels of Chief Justice to respond to removal petitions in 10 days

President John Mahama has directed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to respond to three petitions. She must submit her preliminary response within 10 days.

The petitions were submitted by three individuals on February 14 and March 17, 2025. They allege misconduct and abuse of power by the Chief Justice.

This directive was outlined in a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President. It follows a constitutional procedure that began with the President forwarding the petitions to Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Council of State.

This action is mandated by Article 146(6) of the Constitution. The Council of State consented on March 27, 2025. After this, the petitions were sent to Chief Justice Torkonoo for her comments.

President Mahama expressed concern over a leaked letter from Torkonoo dated March 27, 2025. This letter circulated on social media before he could review it. The President emphasized the importance of due process and professionalism in sensitive matters.

The Chief Justice has been given 10 days to respond. After her response, the President will decide on the next steps in this matter.
