President John Dramani Mahama is setting an example. He will give up half of his annual salary. This money will support healthcare in Ghana through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
The goal is to improve medical services. It aims to help patients with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.
Mr. Mahama made this pledge on April 29. He launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also called Mahama Cares.
Mahama Cares will provide financial support for those with serious illnesses. The initiative seeks to ensure fair access to healthcare, especially for those facing financial challenges.
At the launch event on April 29, 2025, President Mahama shared his personal connection. He recalled losing his father to prostate cancer in 2001 and his mother to hypertension complications in 2016.
He also mentioned a staff member’s child who needs expensive weekly dialysis due to kidney disease.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of supporting the health sector. He urged individuals and businesses to contribute to the Mahama Cares initiative as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).
He encouraged companies in Ghana, including banks and mines, to participate. “The Ghana Medical Trust Fund benefits your clients and employees,” he said.
He asked corporations to consider donating a portion of their CSR funds at year-end. “This will greatly benefit our country,” he stated.
