President John Mahama will launch the National Apprenticeship Programme today. This event takes place in Tamale, just seven days before his 120-day social contract ends.
The programme aims to reduce youth unemployment. It will eliminate costs for skills training in technical and vocational sectors. The government will pay master craftsmen to train young Ghanaians. Trainees will also receive allowances during their training.
Osman Ayariga, CEO of the National Youth Authority, spoke at Gbewaa Palace. He invited Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II to the launch. Ayariga emphasized that the programme addresses concerns from youth and traditional leaders.
"The President has listened to your concerns," he said. "This programme is designed to reduce youth unemployment."
Ayariga explained that beneficiaries will learn a trade with support. The government will pay master craftsmen for their training services. Additionally, trainees will receive allowances while they work.
The programme includes a startup component as well. After completing their apprenticeship, participants can open small businesses. "The government will help you set up your own shop or kiosk," Mr Ayariga added.
