Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman, honored UN Peacekeepers. He spoke at a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony in Accra. This event marked International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
Mr. Ofosu highlighted the courage of those serving in conflict zones. They foster peace and restore hope for millions worldwide. He also paid tribute to heroes who sacrificed their lives for peace.
International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed on May 29 each year. It honors all men and women in UN peacekeeping operations. Their professionalism, dedication, and courage deserve recognition. The day also remembers those who lost their lives for peace.
The Minister stated that UN peacekeeping shows humanity's commitment to preventing armed conflict. It aims to sustain peace and address global security threats. Over decades, peacekeeping has proven effective in promoting stability.
Peacekeeping protects civilians and empowers communities. It supports humanitarian efforts and builds resilient societies. Additionally, it enhances women's and youth's participation in decision-making processes.
However, Mr. Ofosu noted that UN peace operations face expanding demands today. Conflicts are escalating due to changing security threats and geopolitical tensions. Climate challenges further complicate the environment for peacekeepers.
He mentioned inadequate funding, unclear mandates, and political constraints hinder effectiveness. In this context, collective focus must shift towards key imperatives.
Multilateralism is essential for delivering peace in complex environments. Collaboration between the UN and regional organizations like the African Union is crucial. Strengthening these organizations will help maintain international peace according to the UN Charter.
Ghana recognizes the importance of this collaboration with regional organizations. Mr. Osama Makkawi from UNICEF Ghana praised Ghana’s role in UN Peacekeeping efforts since the 1960s.
Today, Ghana ranks seventh among 122 troop-contributing countries globally. This ranking reflects its enduring commitment to global peace and security.
