The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has shared important findings.
It costs about $150 million to win a presidential election in Ghana. Securing a parliamentary seat costs around $600,000.
The CDD highlights that high campaign costs drive corruption in the country. Dr. Kojo Asante, the Director of Programmes at CDD-Ghana, expressed concern during a presentation.
He stated that political actors often spend excessive amounts on campaigns. CDD estimates it costs about $650,000, or GH¢10 million, to win a parliamentary seat. Winning the presidency can cost between $100 million and $150 million.
Dr. Asante noted that this financial burden creates bad incentives for office holders. They may feel pressured to recoup campaign expenses through corrupt means.
