Prioritise inauguration of key boards to restore efficiency and accountability – IET urges Mahama

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in Ghana has urged President John Mahama to speed up the formation of key statutory boards. This action aims to improve service delivery and implement government policies effectively.

Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng, IET President, expressed concerns about delays in establishing essential boards. He highlighted the Engineering Council Board, which regulates and licenses professional engineers.

“Engineers must renew their licenses annually,” he said. “Without the Board, this process has stalled.”

Typically, licensing applications go to the Registrar of the Engineering Council. They are then referred to the Board’s Licensing Committee for review. Final approval is given by the full Board. However, without an inaugurated Board, this process has stopped completely.

This situation has created a backlog of qualified engineers waiting for licensure. Engr. Boateng warned that this gap disrupts regulatory functions and negatively impacts the engineering profession.

He also mentioned delays in forming the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) Board. This delay affects ministries, departments, agencies, and local assemblies that rely on these boards for timely decisions.

“The absence of these governance structures creates bureaucratic bottlenecks,” he stated. “This slows down public service delivery and hampers government projects.”

The IET is appealing to President Mahama to prioritize appointing these critical boards quickly. The association believes restoring these bodies will enhance institutional efficiency and regulatory oversight.

“Urgency is needed in addressing this issue,” Engr. Boateng concluded. “Restoring these boards will improve transparency and accountability in both engineering and public services.”
