Dr. Victor Doke, a security lecturer at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, emphasizes the importance of mental health for security officers. He believes this is key to resolving conflicts effectively.
In an interview on the AM Show with JoyNews, Dr. Doke discussed the need for mental health support. He noted that while training is essential, officers also face intense pressures in conflict situations.
“We must ensure our security personnel receive proper training,” he said. They need to understand their roles clearly.
In conflict zones, officers should avoid chieftaincy disputes or events that may provoke violence. Addressing their mental well-being is crucial for navigating these challenges effectively.
Dr. Doke stressed that security officers must remain neutral during conflicts. This helps prevent escalating tensions and violence.
“Officers should stay detached from situations that could worsen conflicts,” he explained. They will be called upon when their involvement is necessary.
He advocated for a clear strategy involving experts and civil society organizations experienced in conflict resolution.
Dr. Doke also highlighted the need for mental health support for peacekeeping mission officers. These missions can be isolating and stressful.
“Officers often find themselves far from their usual environment,” he noted. Mental health support helps them build resilience and manage stress better.
He concluded by reiterating that prioritizing mental health alongside effective training is vital for long-term peace and stability in conflict areas.
