Prioritize the hospital, not personal interests – Otumfuo charges new KATH board

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, addressed the new board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). He urged them to prioritize the hospital's welfare over personal interests.

During a meeting at Manhyia Palace, he emphasized KATH's importance. The hospital serves millions and must not suffer from internal conflicts or selfish motives.

“Komfo Anokye is the main referral hospital for southern Ghana,” he stated. “If I needed care today, that is where I would go.” He stressed that unity and prudent use of funds are essential.

A major focus was the Heal Komfo Anokye project. This $10 million renovation aims to upgrade dilapidated areas of the hospital. Otumfuo encouraged the board to support this initiative fully.

The new board visited the Palace to introduce themselves and seek blessings. Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo is the CEO and expressed interest in leading the Heal Komfo Anokye project. He aims to speed up fundraising and implementation.

“We understand your vision and are ready to manage daily operations,” Dr. Baidoo said. He also requested Otumfuo’s help in reviving stalled donor-backed infrastructure projects.

Among these halted projects is the Children’s and Maternity Block at KATH. This block is part of a broader British government package that includes Kumasi Airport and Central Market.

Otumfuo noted that Ghana’s IMF agreement had caused delays but remained optimistic about recent talks with the British Trade Envoy.

“These delays began when Ghana entered the IMF programme,” he explained. “President Mahama assured me work will soon resume.” He reiterated that KATH remains his top priority.

The Asantehene concluded by expressing confidence in the new board. He urged them to serve with transparency, dedication, and responsibility to transform KATH into a first-class health facility.
