Dr. Yao Graham, Coordinator of Third World Network-Africa, has opposed the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), arguing it would serve politicians' interests rather than the nation’s.
During an interview on The Big Issue, Dr. Graham criticized claims that privatization would improve efficiency and compel government debt payments to ECG, describing such arguments as "sad."
He highlighted past contracts that benefited individuals at the state's expense, calling for a systemic review of ECG’s management instead of privatization.
“Privatization is not the solution for underperforming agencies. Politicians prioritize personal gains through contracts, neglecting public interest,” he said, urging reforms to address ECG's challenges without privatizing the utility.
