Prof Kanton’s six key systems to revive Ghana’s agricultural sector

Agricultural Research Scientist, Professor Roger Kanton, has identified six key systems. These systems are crucial for transforming Ghana's struggling agricultural sector. They aim to boost food security.

He spoke during a review of President John Dramani Mahama's first 120 days in office on May 7. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach, not just surface-level solutions.

The first system is the seed system. Reliable and quality seeds are vital for increasing yields. They also help strengthen farmer resilience.

Next is mechanisation. Prof Kanton clarified that this means more than just tractors. It includes planters, harvesters, and other equipment.

The third pillar is fertilisation. He noted that Ghana's soils are very acidic. Simply adding fertilizer without liming the soil is ineffective.

Post-harvest management also needs serious attention. Ghana loses up to 50% of its produce after harvest due to poor storage and handling.

Processing is another important area. Prof Kanton suggested modest facilities like those in Burkina Faso and Togo. Reviving companies like Tumu Cotton Company can add value to crops such as soybean and rice.

Lastly, he highlighted the importance of irrigation. Currently, less than 10% of Ghana’s arable land is irrigated. While irrigation alone won't solve all issues, it is essential for reaching potential.

Prof Kanton concluded by urging political leaders to adopt real, science-based solutions instead of rhetoric.
