Legal scholar and law professor, Prof Kwame Gyan, has criticised Ghana’s ministerial vetting process, describing it as inadequate in assessing nominees' competence, integrity, and suitability.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on January 18, Prof Gyan argued that the current system, which rarely rejects nominees, reduces the process to a mere formality.
Highlighting the importance of ministerial roles, he warned that the collective competence of appointees will shape the future of Ghana's 35 million citizens.
“If their collective competencies are inadequate, then we are doomed,” he cautioned.
Prof Gyan also called for reforms, including the replacement of the omnibus appointments committee and treating vetting as a serious job interview.
He proposed adopting a more rigorous system like that used in the United States to ensure nominees inspire confidence and demonstrate true readiness for their roles.
