Prof. Mike Oquaye accuses gov't of 'secret trial' of Chief Justice

Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has criticized the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). He claims they mishandled the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Prof. Oquaye expressed concerns about transparency. He questioned the decision to hold proceedings in-camera.

He believes the judiciary should be free from political interference. He warned that the current handling could erode confidence in the rule of law.

The Chief Justice was suspended due to misconduct allegations. A formal petition was submitted to President John Mahama, leading to an investigation committee.

However, many proceedings have been conducted in-camera. This has drawn criticism from the public and legal experts.

The NDC government insists that the suspension followed constitutional provisions. Yet, Prof. Oquaye argues that secrecy undermines accountability and due process principles.
