Professor Akua Opokua Britwum is chair of National Media Commission

Professor Akua Opokua Britwum has been elected Chair of the National Media Commission (NMC).

She is an Associate Professor at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Her term will last for three years, according to a statement from the NMC.

Prof. Britwum is a respected scholar and activist. She earned her doctorate from Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

She also holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Ghana, Legon. Additionally, she has a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from UCC.

Prof. Britwum completed her secondary education at Aburi Girls’ Secondary School.

Previously, she was Director of the Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy, and Documentation at UCC.

She held the Ela Bhatt Guest Professorship at the University of Kassel in Germany.

Prof. Britwum was also an associate fellow of the Global Labour University.

She is a former Convenor of the Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana.

Additionally, she reviews for several academic journals and serves on editorial boards.

These include the Global Labour Journal and advisory boards for Feminist Africa and International Review of Social History.

Her research focuses on gender and labour studies, development theory, union democracy, and women in the informal economy.
