The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported that prostate and liver cancers are among the top causes of death in the country.

In 2022, prostate cancer claimed 1,233 lives out of 2,395 cases, while liver cancer caused 2,390 deaths out of 2,656 cases. Overall, 27,385 new cancer cases were recorded, with 17,944 deaths.

The GHS emphasized the importance of annual testing to detect these cancers early and provide treatment.

Speaking at a World Cancer Day event, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of GHS, highlighted the need for healthy lifestyles, hepatitis vaccinations, and cancer research.

Cancer survivor Hannah Tetteh shared her experience with multiple brain tumors and urged continued medication adherence. She also appealed for government action to lower treatment costs.
