Professor Jeffrey Haynes, a Politics Professor at London Metropolitan University, has stressed the importance of safeguarding key democratic freedoms, including free speech and the rule of law, to maintain Ghana’s liberal democracy.
Speaking at the 19th Democracy and Good Governance Lecture in Accra, Haynes noted that recent international rankings show a decline in Ghana’s democratic standards, marked by limited access to justice and reduced freedom of expression.
Haynes highlighted the role of human qualities, like integrity and tolerance, in enhancing democracy beyond religious values. He called on Ghanaian leaders to ensure equal treatment for all religions to support democratic growth.
Presiding Bishop Most Reverend Professor J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu echoed these sentiments, urging a focus on values reflecting the image of God.
