Private legal practitioner and social activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has announced a return of the #FixTheCountry movement. They will protest against the government's inaction on illegal mining, known as galamsey.
“It’s been four months,” he said. “The government has shown seriousness in other areas. We believe a clear strategy to tackle galamsey should have been unveiled.” Barker-Vormawor expressed frustration over the lack of a decisive plan for this growing environmental crisis.
He explained that their decision to mobilize again comes from the urgency of the issue. The government has not treated it with the seriousness it deserves. “We’re going back to the streets to remind the government that this is urgent,” he stated.
Barker-Vormawor emphasized that this protest is not for show or political favor. “This goes beyond our daily bread or comfort with ministers we admire,” he said. “Let’s hold the government accountable for addressing our problems.”
The upcoming demonstration aims to reignite public discussion on illegal mining. This issue has caused significant environmental damage, polluted water bodies, and displaced communities across parts of the country.
