A group of protesters took to the streets of Accra yesterday. They demanded an end to illegal small-scale mining, known as ‘galamsey’.
The protest was organized by the Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS). Their goal was to highlight the harmful effects of illegal mining in Ghana.
Mr. Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah led the protesters. They wore red and black clothing during their march. The route started at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and ended at Jubilee House.
The protesters carried placards with various messages. Some read “Blood, Gold, Green,” “Unite Against Galamsey,” and “Stop Galamsey Now.”
They walked through major streets of Accra to voice their concerns. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service were present for security and order.
