Provide explicit laws to protect Ocean – Marine stakeholders urge govt

Stakeholders in Ghana's marine and coastal sectors are urging the government to act. They want clear constitutional provisions for protecting marine resources. This is crucial as Ghana explores its blue economy potential. The blue economy focuses on responsible use, conservation, and restoration of ocean resources.

Professor Francis Kofi Ewusie spoke to Citi News at an expert meeting. He leads the Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences at the University of Ghana. He urged the Constitution Review Committee to promote conservation in the revised constitution. This should include both marine and freshwater ecosystems while supporting sustainable economic growth.

"We want to elevate ocean issues to a constitutional level," he said. "This will make them more respected and important." He also emphasized redefining the ocean's scope. This includes interrelated water bodies and aquatic life.

Additionally, he highlighted concerns about coastal areas facing flooding and erosion. These issues significantly affect local communities.
