Illegal structures at the Weija-Dansoman Ramsar sites were demolished yesterday. The Greater Accra Regional Minister led the operation with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
This action followed a directive from President John Dramani Mahama. He ordered immediate measures to restore the Ramsar sites and a water retention basin at Mallam Junction. This directive came during his tour of flood-prone areas in Accra.
The Ghanaian Times reported that the site under the Mallam Junction Interchange is filled with gravel. It has been turned into a plain field for Caitec Motors, a private firm. Many permanent buildings have also been erected at the Dansoman Ramsar site.
Some structures in flood-prone areas were completely demolished. Other buildings had their walls taken down as a warning to owners. These owners will receive official notices to evacuate and demolish their properties.
